Nutrition Support and Meal Preparation
Working with Health Professionals
At iSupportChef, we provide dedicated in-home specialist meal preparation and culinary coaching services. We understand that for many people, especially those managing health conditions, living with a disability, or ageing in place, navigating healthy eating and meal times can present unique challenges. Our goal is to make nutritious and enjoyable meals accessible and manageable.
We firmly believe in the value of expert health guidance. That’s why we are committed to working alongside Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) and other allied health professionals. This collaborative approach helps ensure our services perfectly complement the expert advice you receive, supporting you or your client’s specific health and wellbeing goals.

Understanding the Role of Dietitians
Dietitians are the recognised experts in food and nutrition. They help you understand how your diet affects your health. In Australia, an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) is a dietitian who has completed a university degree in nutrition and dietetics and meets the specific registration criteria set by Dietitians Australia. The APD program is the only dietetics qualification recognised by the Australian Government for purposes like Medicare and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, as well as by many state governments and private health insurers. APDs maintain their status through ongoing training and education and must follow the Dietitians Australia code of conduct.
While all dietitians are considered nutritionists, in Australia, the profession of nutritionist is not regulated, meaning anyone can use the title without specific training. Dietitians (APDs) are uniquely qualified to work in private medical practices, medical centres, or hospitals, in addition to public health, research, teaching, or the food industry, where nutritionists may also work. It’s important to check the credentials of your healthcare professional.
Dietitians can provide support to people of all ages with specific dietary needs or restrictions. They can help adjust your diet to improve health and wellbeing, particularly for chronic conditions like diabetes, cancer, obesity, food allergies, high cholesterol, kidney disease, gastrointestinal disease, heart disease, malnutrition, eating disorders, and food intolerances. They also provide support through different life stages such as infancy, childhood, pregnancy, menopause, and ageing. Visiting a dietitian can provide personalised nutrition advice, lifestyle tips, and eating plans, helping you make informed food choices.
Our Collaboration with Dietitians
Our services are designed to work seamlessly with your dietitian’s recommendations. A dietitian specialises in supporting individuals possessing specific knowledge relevant to supporting people from all walks of life, and all abilities. They are skilled in translating complex nutritional science into practical, achievable strategies tailored to individual needs, considering factors like mobility, sensory issues, and cognitive abilities.
iSupportChef collaborates closely with dietitians. This partnership ensures that the meals we prepare and the culinary coaching we offer align perfectly with the dietitian’s expert plan. This seamless integration between nutritional guidance and practical meal solutions offers several key benefits:
- Eliminates confusion about what foods to eat
- Reduces the risk of dietary non-compliance
- Ensures nutritional adequacy in every meal
- Supports your health goals consistently
- Adapts to your changing nutritional needs over time
By bridging the gap between dietary theory and practical implementation, this collaborative approach empowers you to enjoy meals that are not only delicious but also precisely tailored to your specific health requirements.

Nutrition Support for NDIS Participants
For NDIS participants, the scheme may provide funding for nutrition support. This can include funding for a dietitian to create and review your nutritional meal plan. To receive nutrition support in your NDIS plan, you need to provide evidence of your disability-related support needs, such as a detailed report and nutritional meal plan from your dietitian. A report from another suitably qualified health professional can also explain the need for nutrition support.
The NDIS considers your disability’s impact on your ability to understand healthy eating or to eat, cook, or prepare meals on your own. If your disability affects your ability to prepare meals independently, and you don’t have family, friends, or carers who can help, the NDIS may be able to fund a support worker for meal preparation assistance. iSupportChef’s services can fall under this type of support, helping you follow your dietitian’s meal plan and manage mealtimes safely and enjoyably.
NDIS dietitians have specialised knowledge about nutrition evidence related to specific disabilities, impacts of medications, and diet modifications. They have skills in conducting nutrition assessments that consider the unique features of a client’s disability, including physical and cognitive limitations and communication difficulties. They can provide nutrition therapy, such as healthy eating advice and mealtime management plans. Dietitians often work as part of an interdisciplinary team. Your dietitian will recommend how often your nutrition plan should be reviewed to ensure it continues to meet your needs.
Nutrition and Mealtime Support in Aged Care
Good nutrition is a foundation for healthy ageing, crucial for preventing malnutrition, managing chronic conditions, and maintaining energy. Dietetics in aged care goes beyond simple meal plans; it’s about creating personalised, evidence-based strategies to address age-related challenges. These can include a slower metabolism, reduced appetite, or changes in taste and smell, which can lead to nutritional deficiencies or weight changes.
Dietitians are skilled at identifying signs of malnutrition and developing actionable solutions like adjusting portion sizes or incorporating nutrient-dense snacks. They also help address common barriers seniors face, such as limited access to food or difficulties with meal preparation, by recommending easy-to-prepare meals. Dietitians provide personalised advice and counselling, develop healthy eating plans, and offer nutrition education to support informed food choices. They collaborate with other healthcare providers to create comprehensive nutrition care plans.
Personalisation is key in aged care, ensuring meal plans align with medical needs, including managing conditions like diabetes or heart disease, and also personal and cultural preferences. For example, a senior with swallowing difficulties may need texture-modified meals. Access to nutrition support for seniors can be obtained by consulting with a dietitian, receiving counselling through aged care services, or participating in education programs. Dietitians Australia also sets standards to support the nutritional and emotional wellbeing of seniors. Eating is also social, and dietitians can help create positive mealtime environments, incorporating enjoyable foods and encouraging social interaction to combat isolation.
iSupportChef’s in-home meal preparation services directly support the nutritional needs of seniors by providing meals tailored to dietary requirements, medical conditions, texture modifications (as recommended by health professionals), and personal preferences, helping overcome meal preparation barriers and supporting overall wellbeing in line with dietetic guidance.

Supporting Swallowing Difficulties (Dysphagia)
Difficulty swallowing, known as dysphagia, is a condition that requires careful management to ensure safety during eating and drinking. If not managed correctly, food or drink can enter the airway, leading to infection or pneumonia.
A speech pathologist is the qualified health professional who assesses and diagnoses swallowing difficulties and prescribes tailored management strategies, including safe swallowing techniques and/or texture modified food and drinks. They work to help individuals understand their condition and swallow more easily and safely, improving the mealtime experience. They also provide training to carers and staff.
When a person is identified with dysphagia by a speech pathologist, a dietitian works as part of the team to ensure the person’s nutritional needs are met. The dietitian discusses swallowing risks, health status, preferences, and cultural choices with the individual to gain agreement on texture modification, ensuring nutrition requirements are met safely and pleasurably. Other professionals like Occupational Therapists (OTs) may also be involved, advising on special utensils or positioning.
The Mealtime Support Plan or Meal Time Management Plan developed in consultation with the individual and reviewed regularly, is key to safety and health for someone with swallowing difficulties. It recommends the safe consistency of food and drinks (often using the International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative – IDDSI – framework) and other strategies for safe and enjoyable meals. Always following this plan is crucial.
Working as a collaborative team, including the individual, family, support staff, speech pathologist, dietitian, and others like OTs or medical practitioners, is the best way to support safe and enjoyable mealtimes. Support people (family, carers, disability support workers) play a vital role in using the plan, knowing the signs of difficulty, preparing food/fluids correctly, and using strategies like appropriate positioning and pace. OTs can also help with positioning, modified equipment (utensils, plates), and supporting skills development related to eating and drinking independently or preparing food.
iSupportChef’s services are designed to support the meal preparation aspects of plans created by this multidisciplinary team, particularly regarding nutritional requirements set by a dietitian and texture modifications recommended by a speech pathologist.
